My Mum Tried to Pray the Gay Away, So I Blocked her Everywhere
Trigger warning: Sexual abuse
Charles* (30) and his mum were friends. She knew he was queer. She never accepted it, but it wasn’t a problem. She loved him, and they spent time scrolling through TikTok together. But after her sister died, things got bad, and she wanted to pray the gay away. It didn’t go well — and led him to block her everywhere.
This is Charles’* story, as told to Dennis.
In January last year, I sat with my mum in the sitting room. The television was on, but no one was watching. The rugged floor was dusty, and we were both glued to TikTok. We loved doomscrolling together on Sundays when she didn’t leave to work. We were friends— the last of our family in Nigeria—and TikTok was a bonding ritual. Sometimes, queer content would come up. My mum would sigh, but that was all.
Things started to change after her sister died three years ago.
We’ve been through a lot together as a family. Ten years ago, I went to a party with friends. A friend of a confidant who knew my sister recorded me at the par
In today’s digital age, social media platforms have become essential in connecting people worldwide, transcending geographical boundaries and fostering a sense of community. Among these platforms, Twitter has emerged as a unique space for LGBTQ+ individuals, especially gay men.
Despite being owned by Elon Musk, who has faced criticism for his past comments on the LGBTQ+ community, Twitter remains a thriving hub for the gay community.
One of the key factors contributing to its popularity is the emergence of “gay alt Twitter,” a vibrant subsection that has revolutionized how gay men interact, express themselves, and forge meaningful connections.
Embracing Identity: The Power of Gay Alt Twitter
Gay alt Twitter offers a safe and empowering space for gay men to embrace their identity without fear of judgment or discrimination.
In this virtual haven, individuals can create alternative profiles that allow them to be more open and expressive about their sexual orientation, interests, and desires.
Here, they can connect with like-minded individuals, share their stor
At a glance, we realize Twitter to be one of the most widespread social media platforms that we use today. As of 2018, Twitter boasts 335 million monthly active users, that’s about as many nudes I’ve taken this week, so that’s a lot.
But Twitter, enjoy many platforms where people can voice their opinions, has many different facets. We have political Twitter for the Trumps, the Mays and the Jong-Il’s of the world. We have X-Rated Twitter, where our fellow porn stars promote their new scenes, homemade videos and content for us to appreciate under the covers. We have stan twitter, where music fans throw each other to the wolves constantly, resulting in a generous amount of controversy and ultimately, promotion for their favourite artist (I’m a Lamb for life, love you Mimi).
Which brings me to Gay Twitter. Gay Twitter has its roots in many of the above mentioned. We do the most we can for our pop princesses, we are extremely politically charged, especially when it poses a threat to our community, and there is an abundance of thirst traps, gym pictures and sex st
History Today: How a side project in 2006 became Twitter and eventually X
On July 15, 2006, Twitter (now called X) became available to the widespread. Over the next ten years, the platform grew to have more than 300 million users.
The online microblogging site was launched by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone.
Also on this day in 1997, Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace was murdered by serial killer Andrew Cunanan.
As part of Firstpost Explainers’ History Today series, here’s a look at what happened on July 15:
On this day in 2006, Twitter, now called X, was launched as Odeo’s side project that let users send small status updates to groups of friends by texting a single number.
In the years that followed, Twttr became Twitter, and the simple idea of “microblogging” quickly gained popularity.
It went on to become one of the top social media platforms in the world.
Notably, Jack Dorsey came up with the thought of letting people forward personal updates through SMS to groups.
Six months after the launch, Twttr became Twitter. Whe
