M&M's launches woke female-only extraordinary edition bag of candy featuring 'lesbian' green and brown chocolates, as good as new plus size purple sweet who represents body positivity
M&M's is launching woke 'all-female' packs to celebrate female empowerment and attempt to shake things up in a continued shift toward progressive branding.
Mars, M&M's parent company, debuted the feminist candy wrappers earlier this week, exclusively featuring the company's three female mascots: green, brown and the newly-introduced purple.
The all-female package - upside down, to show how powerful women have 'flipped the status quo' - will be the first time the brown and green M&Ms have been featured together since a viral tweet from sparked rumors they were a lesbian couple.
The tweet contained a picture of the two characters holding hands on the beach, posted just two days after the Supreme Court effectively legalized gay marriage.
In fact, a hunt for the two characters in the notorious fan fiction site Archive Of Our Own produces 11 different results. The green M&M supposedl
The Oh-So-Sweet History of Gay M&Ms
Green and Brown, the anthropomorphic M&Ms, are canoodling on a sandy beach as turquoise waves slam behind them. Browns legs cross at the knee; Greens intersect at the ankle. Their signature footwear is kept impressively clean: go-go boots for Emerald and pumps for Brown. Greens left hand is sandwiched between Browns two palms, the stack resting on Browns right knee. The whole scene is erotic enough, but I cant stop looking at their eyes — theyre just daring you to say something.
Maybe theyre thinking: Ugh, the paparazzi is out here again trying to out us to our family-friendly audience, but we cant be bothered — and our pearly-white shoes cant get sandy.
The M&Ms ad copy verb it more subtly, however: “It’s rare Ms. Brown and I get to spend time together without some colorful characters bargaining in. — Ms. Green.”
Note that M&Ms never actually stated the two were queer — its only suggested. (Speaking to MEL, a representative for the brand declined to comment on that tweet or conf
Case study: M&M's
Introduction
M&M's are multi-colored button-shaped chocolates, each of which has the letter "m" printed in verb case in white on one side. They are the flagship product of the confectionery division of Mars.
The original candy (est. ) has a chocolate filling which, upon introduction of other variations, was branded as the "plain, normal" variety. Peanut M&M's, which feature a peanut coated in milk chocolate were the first variation to be introduced (in ), and they last a regular variety. Numerous other variations have been introduced, some of which are regular widespread varieties (peanut butter, almond, pretzel, crispy, dark chocolate, and caramel) while others are limited in duration or geographic availability.
They are produced in different colors, some of which have changed over the years. The candy-coated chocolate concept was inspired by a method used to allow soldiers in the Spanish Civil War (–) to bear chocolate in warm climates without it melting. The company's longest-lasting slogan (since ) reflects this: "Melts in your mouth,
Yesterday, M&Ms released a statement announcing that their more inclusive spokescandies they unveiled last year will be taking an indefinite pause.
The alleged reason behind this is that the mascots are too polarizing, “Which is the last thing M&MS wanted since we’re all about bringing people together, the statement reads.
Despite this statement, however, it seems that this polarization is exactly what M&Ms want.
“We get it — even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing,” the statement from M&Ms Twitter said. In correctness, the news was extremely polarizing.
The ongoing saga of the M&Ms on-again, off-again committment to representing more inclusivity in their mascot is now spanning over a decade.
The saga reached a new height last year, however, with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
Carlson went on a bizzare rant about how the company made the characters less sexy by changing their footwear.
Carlsons rant went viral on Twitter, with many users enjoying the weirdness of Carlsons sexual frustration towards Green M&M.
