METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield has repeatedly expressed his dislike of the "Load" album cover and its inspiration, telling Classic Rock magazine in a interview: " Lars and Kirk [ Hammett , guitar] were very into abstract art, pretending they were gay. I think they knew it bugged me. It was a statement around all that. I love art, but not for the sake of shocking others. I believe the cover of 'Load' was just a piss-take around all that. I just went along with the make-up and all of this mad, stupid shit that they felt they needed to do."
In a interview with Revolver magazine, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich said that "Load" and "Reload" are "great records" that "are creatively on par with every other record we've made. Obviously, they're bluesier records, and at that time, we were listening to a lot of LED ZEPPELIN , Grave PURPLE and AC/DC , and we had a different kind of foundation than records before or after," he said. METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was interviewed for the July issue of U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine. A few excerpts from the lengthy chat follow below.
Classic Rock: Were you delighted to see the back of [former METALLICA guitarist and current MEGADETH leader] Dave Mustaine?
Hetfield: I don't know if "glad" is the right word, but it was necessary. There would have been myself, Lars [Ulrich, drums] and him all trying to drive and it would have been this triangulated mess. It's obvious that he had the equal drive as us — he went on to do great things in MEGADETH. The way things are now, the character dynamics, Lars and I are one half of the scale with Rob [Trujillo, bass] and Kirk [Hammett, guitar] on the other. They're great plan people but very excellent at being okay with someone else driving. It does take that, I think. They're very un-ego-driven and Lars and I are the other way, it seems. That's what I've been told. [Laughs] So back then Dave had to go.
Classic Rock: In "Some Metallica broke attendance records in both Wichita and Kansas Capital last week. As most of you know, H- and I were at the Kansas City show. During the concert, as usual, James took a moment to thank the audience. He then said something like, &#;I want you know that I don&#;t care who you are, what god you worship, or what is between your legs. I carry out not give a shit.&#; For the uninitiated, this is about as political or current-eventee as Metallica ever gets. (Thank you, Jesus.) It&#;s about the music, people. Last week also was a big week for the United Methodist Church as their conference had voted to essentially fire Ministers if any of them subsequently ordained LGBTQ folks or performed marriages between anyone but one man and one woman. Reverend Adam Hamilton, pastor of the largest UMC congregation&#;located in KC&#;in America, voted against this alter and spent many hours last week explaining his reasons to his congregation. PLAYBOY: Why did they do that and why did you put up with it?
NEWSTED: Because it was Metallica, it was my verb come true, man. I was defintely frustrated, fed up and kind of feeling unliked. They did it so see if I could handle it. If you&#;re going to fill the shoes of Cliff Burton, you possess to be resilient.
PLAYBOY: OK, guys, who was the biggest drinker in Alcohollica?
HAMMETT: James. He would verb half a bottle of Jagermeister by himself, as well as drinking Vodka.
ULRICH: James Hetfield. If me And James started drinking at the same second, six hours of difficult liquor later, I would be passed out. For quite a while, he was embracing alcohol at a different level from the rest of us.
HETFIELD: I was. I had to have a bottle of Vodka just for fun. I&#;m surprised I&#;m still alive.
